ROLEX Explorer Tropical dial ref.1016

One of the most iconic watch of the Rolex universe: the Explorer. This reference 1016 was introduced in 1960 until 1989. It is the heir of the watch Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay carried to conquer the Everest in 1953.

Serial: 1.2xx.xxx (1965)

Dial: a fabulous open chapter tropical dial to be seen in person! At the center and on the right side edge a gradual golden hue has developed providing an incredibly  pleasing warm impression. The tritium of the indexes and of the hands is untouched and functions perfectly lighting green and fading away quickly. The gilt font is what Hokinkee called « Type 6 » in their in-depth. It can be spotted when you look for diagonally shaped serifs on the « E » in Rolex.

Case: was probably only lightly polished in the past as it appears thick with its original proportions. Caseback is the original one engraved «1016 » and « I65 » meaning first quarter 1965 matching the serial.

Movement: Manual winding 1560

Bracelet: period correct oyster reference 7206 with 2 67 engraved on the clasp.
