How about getting on your wrist the first and only watch ever worn on the moon? This is it. The Speedmaster CK2998. Tool-watch by excellence measuring speed and the only one having resisted to the NASA battery of tests. Succeeding even ahead of Rolex sports watches! At the time Omega was the Olympics timekeeper and positioned itself as the brand for « active » clients. In short: an true icon.
Provenance: the original owner who kept the watch until March 2018 was a finish rally-car navigator. Both him and his pilot won their 2998-1 at a car racing contest possibly organized by a local US army base given the delivery mentioned on the extract from the archives. The timepieces were 2 serial numbers apart!
Serial: N• 17’301’XXX sold in March 1960 to a « US Army Foreign Exchanges ». One of the first for this reference. It is estimated that 2000 ref.2998-1 were produced based on the blocs of caliber 321 made & fitted in the Speedmasters within serial ranges 17’301’xxx & 17’761’xxx. The presented timepiece has retained an exceptional condition and aged beautifully.
Dial & case: very strong tonneau-shapped water resistant type thick case. Solid Omega logo. Absolutely flawless dial with pronounced pumpkin patina tritium index and alpha hands. White straight chrono hand, white small alpha hands for subdials. Original « base 1000 » bezel with grey hue. Diameter size = 40mm.
Bracelet: original early 7077 band with stretch links in good condition and also original 6 end links. Stainless steel folding deployant clasp, stamped 1.60 matching the serial period and also very likely to be original.
Movement: Lemania mecanical 321 caliber, 17 jewels.
Box & papers: comes with its Omega extract from the archives and Omega presentation box.
