Iconic and sublim design, the « Big Red » generation of the Daytona certainly helped building the legend of ROLEX as a brand. It is one of its best seller and an analogy with the sports cars universe would say it is the 911 of the wrist! The « Big Red » is the third dial generation of this reference and came after the « Sigma » dial. It was produced from 1975 until 1987.
Serial: 9,1xx,xxx (1985)
Dial: Perfect black dial. The contrast with the creamy subdials is enhancing the beauty of this icon. All tritium dots are perfect. The matching luminous material with the hands is nicely working providing the expected green glow quickly vanishing.
Case: Very thick with little polishing evidence. Caseback 6263 CRS (Charles Reinhard Spielmann was a friend of Hans Wilsdorf and Rolex’ subsidiary for parts). Pushers MK2 (with circular line) matching the period (switch from MK1 to MK2 around serial 6.5m).
Bezel: original MK3 Rolex bezel
Mouvement: Valjoux 727. As per all steel Daytona’s post 1980 we can see the chrono number above the 727.
Bracelet: original oyster bracelet 78350/19, 571 end links, J9 clasp from 1985.
Box & Papers: box, punched guarantee from Jeddah & calendar/booklets
